About

In January 2010, Collective Parasol was founded in Kyoto as a private organization of art and social-cultural activity, by artists, curators, a filmmaker, art law specialist and art student. Collective Parasol is the name of community but at the same time it is the name of art space we run in Kyoto.

We do not have any clear framework but we are a fluid community so that each member could organize his/her own project, put together an idea with the other members and collaborate with guests from a wide range of fields who are working with creative projects. Our space functions as an open-ended platform, which could change itself according to projects. It could be a café, gallery, theater, studio, residency, meeting place for local people, and so on. In addition, the space is open to people other than the members and they could use this space in the physical/non-physical form, such as space, equipment, and technical supports from the members, in the same manner as a barter trade exchange.

Through demonstrating all these activities, Collective Parasol has started its journey into unknown territory to find a new form of ‘collective’, challenging the ideas of artist collective/community and alternative space, and its solidarity, its essentiality and possibility.
